This week, back to Style
Trends stick around because they work in real life. Fads fade because they don’t.
This week, we’re focused on the Trends that actually fit how you live.
Stirrups had their moment. Remember those bad boys? The only pants that turned your legs into upside down triangles. They never fit how most of us move and dress, so they never stuck around.
Trends Worth Buying and Trying
A trend should never own you. The best ones end up belonging to you.
Think about Katharine Hepburn in trousers. Audrey Hepburn in capris. Doris Day in pedal pushers. Laura Petrie, played by Mary Tyler Moore, in her cigarette pants. We don't remember those shapes as what was popular then. We remember them as theirs.
Trends come and go, and they come back around. The shape might change a little. The fabric might change. But a trend returns because it fit real women's lives the first time. Fads flare up and vanish.

So here are ten trends that earned their spot this fall. Wear the ones that fit your life and skip the rest.
Ten Trends Worth Wearing This Fall
1. Rich, warm colors. Chocolate, cognac, camel, espresso, burgundy, forest green. Think cozy luxury…the first fire of the season, a glass of wine, a bite of chocolate, cashmere against skin. Say my name!
2. Suede. Maybe you have a suede jacket or bag tucked away. Pair it with your dark jeans and a cream knit and you’re out the door.
3. Sleek ankle boots with a low heel. The fall ankle boot has a slim silhouette, with a clean tow and low or kitten heel. through the shaft, with a clean toe and a low or kitten heel. It sits under jeans without bulk and works with trousers too. Here’s an example of what ankle boots were on trend a few years ago vs now. My mind went immediately to the movie ELF, but here we are.
4. Dark straight-leg jeans. Your go-to pair is already on trend, and straight legs are the cut to choose this fall. They run the same width from knee to hem, so they skim over boots without bunching. Skinny jeans fit the leg all the way down, which looks sleek but leaves less room for the boot. Trade your sneakers for loafers and see how the whole outfit changes.
5. Burgundy nails. Wine-toned polish is the classic fall manicure, and it still reads as fresh. A glossy finish makes it look almost jewel-like. It’s like happy hour at your fingertips.
6. Silk scarves, vintage style. Vintage is having a moment, and the silk scarf may be the clearest proof. Funny how the print your grandmother knotted at her neck (or over her fresh wash and set) is suddenly the one everyone wants. Tie one to the handle of your favorite fall handbag, and you'll bring a little of her with you.
7. Quality knits. That cable-knit or cashmere sweater you love is still right. Layer it under a camel coat for an easy fall look.
8. Chocolate and berry lips. Dark lipstick is everywhere this fall, and it's a fun way to try the season. But our lips thin a little with age, and a deep opaque shade can make them disappear. Reach for a sheer tint in a berry or chocolate instead. It gives you the color and still lets your own lip show through. Back when I worked for Clinique, Almost Honey
9. Brooches. Pinned to a blazer lapel, a coat, or a scarf, a brooch is the easiest way to update something you already own. Vintage pieces from a thrift shop or estate sale give you the look for very little. [Your true thrift find goes here.]
10. Chocolate suede and soft shapes. Suede bags are everywhere this season. Top-handle bags and slouchy hobos are back, and the trend is moving from the crossbody toward a shoulder bag or handled tote. [Your true line about your chocolate suede hobo goes here.] Pull out a bag you already own, carry it with your jeans and a knit, and notice how it changes the outfit.
S.H.E. says…
Style: I grabbed my chocolate suede handbag from Quince this morning, and it shifted the whole outfit. The suede is soft, the shape is relaxed, and it’s easy to carry.

Happiness: This gold brooch belonged to my mother-in-law. I think of it as my power-up pin. She was a woman I never had the honor of meeting, but I respect her strength, she raised nine amazing people.

**I used a magnetic brooch clip from Amazon to attach it to my leather blazer.
Everyday life: I set my table with warm cognac tones and suddenly the whole room feels like fall. It’s the easiest way to shift your everyday surroundings without buying anything new.
